Stowability
Stowability covers how freight fits in the trailer with other freight. It is one of the four transportation characteristics FedEx Freight lists as the inputs to a class, and one of the three that the published density scale presumes are absent. Freight that has an unusual or significant stowability characteristic is therefore classified on that characteristic rather than on its density.
Why stowability can override a density band
FedEx Freight defines stowability as how freight fits in the trailer with other freight.
NMFTA states that unusual or significant handling, stowability or liability characteristics may be a contributing factor in the assignment of classes.
Freight with special stowability needs is given unique identifiers for freight with special handling, stowability, or liability needs, held under its own entry rather than a density band.
Frequently asked
Does the density scale still apply if the freight has stowability problems?
It is not meant to. The density scale presumes there are no unusual or significant handling, stowability or liability characteristics, and NMFTA states that such characteristics may be a contributing factor in the assignment of classes.
What is used instead of a density band?
Freight with special stowability needs is given unique identifiers for freight with special handling, stowability, or liability needs, held under its own entry rather than a plain density band.
