Handling

In the NMFC, handling covers whether the freight requires special loading equipment or precautions. It is one of the four transportation characteristics FedEx Freight lists as the inputs to a class, alongside density, stowability and liability. It is also one of the three the density scale presumes are absent when it is applied.

What handling covers in the NMFC

FedEx Freight defines handling as whether the freight requires special loading equipment or precautions.

NMFTA states that unusual or significant handling, stowability or liability characteristics may be a contributing factor in the assignment of classes.

Handling is defined by how the freight must be loaded, while density is defined by weight in relation to size, so a density calculation cannot detect a handling need by itself.

Frequently asked

What counts as handling in the NMFC?

FedEx Freight defines it as whether the freight requires special loading equipment or precautions. It is one of the four transportation characteristics a class is calculated from, alongside density, liability and stowability.

Does special handling change a density-based class?

NMFTA states that unusual or significant handling characteristics may be a contributing factor in the assignment of classes, and freight with special handling needs is given unique identifiers instead of a plain density band.
